Dr. Banerjee

Dr. Rahul Banerjee is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon. His remarkable career journey spans from prestigious universities and battlefields, to clinical work and volunteer medical missions. Now, he is excited to bring two decades of expertise in orthopaedics to The Height Center.

Dr. Banerjee graduated with honors from Brown University and completed medical school at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He went on to complete his orthopaedic surgery residency and an orthopaedic trauma fellowship at Brown University. Following his training, Dr. Banerjee served in the United States Air Force and then on the faculty at the University of Texas Southwestern. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, as well as the author of textbook chapters and over 25 peer-reviewed publications.

Surgery With the Precice® System

The Precice system surgical procedure is minimally invasive and can generally be accomplished with incisions measuring just 1-1.5 inches. The operation takes approximately two hours for both limbs.

Lengthening

The Precice implant lengthens the bones internally while being managed by an external remote control. Regular physical therapy sessions help you return to full range of motion, weight-bearing and daily activity as quickly as possible.

Results

Once you reach your desired height, the lengthening process is stopped. Regular check-ins and physical therapy continue as the newly formed bone solidifies and strengthens. The Science of Limb Lengthening

Limb lengthening is a surgical procedure used to increase the length of a limb. It’s often employed to correct significant leg length discrepancies or bone growth irregularities, but it can also be used for cosmetic height enhancement. The technique is based on the body’s natural ability to regenerate new bone, soft tissue, ligaments, blood vessels and nerves.

When the tibia or femur is surgically separated into two segments and an internal lengthening device is inserted, it slowly separates the bone to create a small gap. The body creates new bone tissue to fill in this gap, increasing the overall length of the treated limb. The Precice system uses proprietary magnet technology to remotely extend the implant rod and elongate the bone by about 1 mm each day without the need for an external fixator.

Our Procedures

Bilateral Femur Lengthening

The femur extends from the hip joint to the knee joint and is the longest, strongest bone in the body. Bilateral femur lengthening involves inserting the Precice implant into the bone to gradually separate two segments of the femur, allowing new bone tissue to fill the space.

Bilateral Tibia Lengthening

The tibia is the larger of the two bones in the lower leg, connecting the knee to the ankle. In bilateral tibia lengthening, the bone is surgically divided into two segments and the Precice implant is inserted to gradually pull them apart, creating a gap for new bone tissue to form.

Staged Bilateral Femur Lengthening Followed by Bilateral Tibia Lengthening

Staged bilateral femur lengthening followed by bilateral tibia lengthening allows for the most overall height gain over two procedures. Treatment involves first lengthening the femur and then the tibia approximately one year later to ensure proper healing and rehabilitation.

Hardware Removal

Once the new bone has completely regenerated and you’ve achieved your desired height, the last step will be the removal of the Precice implant. This takes place after the distraction (lengthening) and consolidation (healing) phase of treatment. Hardware is typically removed one to two years after insertion, depending on your individual needs and goals.
